ST. JOHN'S WORT
A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE TO PROZAC

Natural Remedies are often excellent alternatives to prescription drugs routinely prescribed for depression. One of the best herbs for mood elevation is St. John's Wort. Studies have shown St. John's Wort to be a natural alternative to conventional antidepressant drugs. Improvement was shown with symptoms of sadness, helplessness, depression, anxiety, headaches and exhaustion with little to no reported side effects.

St. John's Wort is an herb whose medicinal uses continue to gain in popularity. Traditionally, it has been used for analgesia and gastrointestinal problems. More recently studies have proclaimed its ability to alleviate depression. St. John's Wort is prescribed over Prozac 2 to 1 in Europe with great results.

Doses to treat depression range from 400mg to 1000mg per day of the total plant. Its action is based on the abililty of the active ingredient, hypericin to inhibit the breakdown of neurotransmitters in the brain. The herb also inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) and works as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI); both are actions similar to drugs prescribed for depression. St. John's Wort should not be taken with any other antidepressants and no one should stop taking any prescribed medications for depression without proper medical care.
