SO YOU WANT TO BE GREEN
In December 1972, the Apollo Mission made its last trip to the moon. A major part of its legacy was that amazing photograph of our small blue planet floating in space - our totally interconnected home. It spawned an awareness deep within us that on some level, our actions affect everything else for which it is also home - the plants, the animals, the oceans, the forests, the earth itself. And while science is still "discovering" this interconnectness, we are only beginning to truly understand the impact our actions have.
For many generations, we assumed that if we didn't understand the purpose of something's existence, that it probably had no purpose. Fortunately that consciousness is changing, however slowly, and there are more and more opportunities for individuals to make a difference through his/her actions. Once we make the decision to make a difference, there are various ways to approach it, but sometimes the options can be very confusing.
Rather than list all the ways one can accomplish that, the following is a list of considerations which will help you determine for yourself the "greenness" of a cause, company or individual product. Here is a quick eight step questionnaire to help in your decision making process:
Green gifts giving makes a statement about both the giver and the receiver - that they care! It's a wonderful way of helping the earth one gift at a time at a time - when our earth really needs it. These check points can be used all year long and applied to our individual purchases as well. Sometimes it may not be possible to meet all the criteria mentioned, but if we can each buy nothing with less than a 70% rating, we will go a long way to restoring our home.
As Chief Seattle so eloquently stated many years ago, "the earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth." And if we each do our small part, we may have Her around for a very long time - perhaps to the Seventh Generation.
