BUYING AN ELECTROMAGNETIC
FIELD DETECTOR

For example, a crib may be placed on a second floor right on top of an electrical distribution box located above the kitchen ceiling. Such situations, as earlier described, are easily addressable. Manufacturers are also working on developing products that address radiation from cellular phones.

Research dealing with the health effects of cellular radiation on human beings is in its infancy and it will take some time to learn what their effects are. In the meantime, as the usage of cellular phones increases and the frequencies used by cellular phone manufacturers increase to take advantage of new wireless technologies, users are exposing themselves more and more to these fields.

Radio frequency fields associated with cellular phone usage range in the 900 to 1,800 megahertz values and are important due to the fact that users are placing the emitter very close to their brain tissue for prolonged periods of time.

As of today the U.S. Government has not made a clear determination of what are considered safe levels of these fields in what relates to cellular phone usage, and to make things even more difficult, the ways that the fields behave around a cellular phone are such that they are difficult to measure. Several companies have already developed shields that can be placed around cellular phones to lower the exposure by the user.

In the future, it is expected that there will be products in the market that will address this issue from the additional perspectives of detection of our radio frequency flux between the unit and the person and the development of newer technologies that help maintain these fields away from the user.

To complicate things even further, the recent roll out of PCS based technology is demanding the installation of additional antenna that are starting to densely cover urban areas. Although the guidelines for radiation thresholds have been made by the Government, at the time no U.S. agency is monitoring in any constant manner the emissions of these various antennae sites. It is suspected that because of load situations, these emissions may exceed those standards set by the Government.

In the future, meters that measure the strength of these cellular based technologies will be in the market. Users will be able to measures the fields emitted by antennas in their neighborhood as well as those emitted by their own cellular phones. Stay tuned.
