In the past several years I have noticed that more and more people are discovering the benefits of having a fountain in a living and/or working area. They are attracted to fountains' beauty, their ability to help reduce stress and foster relaxation, and a host of other benefits.
Stress Reduction and Relaxation
If you've ever sat beside a waterfall or a swiftly flowing stream you know how soothing and relaxing the sound of running water is. It helps to block out less harmonious noises, and if we focus on it, can also block out the unharmonious noises inside our own minds.
If you live in an environment characterized by intrusive noises which can be distracting to relaxation or meditation you may find that the sounds of a fountain help to prevent such distractions. In addition you can consciously focus on its sounds in order to release the mind from ordinary consciousness into a deeper state.
Positive and Negative Ions
Ions reproduce and repair body cells. They're transmitted into the body through the air supply and are circulated by the blood. Too many positive ions (the result of air pollution) can cause depression, and ultimately, sickness. Negative ions have a beneficial effect on the body and mind, enhancing the ability to both relax and concentrate, and sleep. They also attach themselves to particles of pollution and clean the air.
The Symbolism of Flowing Water
Water is a mutable element. As it flows it adapts itself to whatever shape it moves through. Because of its motion, though, it is not limited by the forms through which it moves.
As humans, we often find ourselves resistant to movement, to leaving the limitations of the past and to moving towards the freedom of new ways of being. To watch, hear, and open all of our outer and inner senses to the flow of water reminds us that flow and change are the natural way of life.
We can also be reminded of water's strength: that without exerting excessive force it gradually wears down all which is in its path. So, when we allow our own innate energies to flow we dissolve mental and emotional blockages.
Choosing Your Fountain
Fountains come in many beautiful designs, and in a wide range of prices.
You can find an appropriate fountain for almost every imaginable taste or decor. Then you can, if you wish, personalize your choice with the addition of crystals, shells, small statues, and silk or live flowers.
Then plug it in, relax, and enjoy a sound as old as time, the healing music of running water.
