A long distance telephone service helps you save the planet for dolphins and humans alike with every long distance call you make. Tones - The Environmental Phone Company is wholly owned by a coalition of non-profits environmental groups and gives 100% of its profits to grassroots environmental campaigns. Tones uses recycled paper for bills, offers free calls to elected officials, and prints environmental information on the second page of each month's bill. These "Green Alerts" update subscribers on current environmental issues and what they can do to help through writing letters and making phone calls.How much more does the consumer pay for environmental peace of mind? Tones' rates actually save consumers about 5-10% off the base rates of the leading carriers. "Since we're not paying for saturation TV ad campaigns, we can offer reasonable rates and still raise funds for the environment," says Sarah Kroon, Tones' Director.
Organizations such as the Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs), Day 2000, and the National Environmental Law Center started Tones as a benefit to their members and as a way to involve the public in environmental issues as part of their everyday lives. By leasing lines from a major carrier , Tones works like a co-op, paying a wholesale rate for long distance service and passing the savings on to their subscribers.
"We have a great product here. Not only do people save money with our service, but they can also feel certain their money is going towards issues they support, rather than into some high paid executive's wallet," said Kroon. "The biggest challenge is getting the word out to people."
While more and more companies are choosing to donate a portion of their profits to worthy causes, Tones is one of the few companies that is entirely owned by non-profits. "Our whole reason for existence is to raise funds for environmental work. We have no deep-pocketed investors or high paid executives to worry about, so people can feel better about paying a phone bill to Tones knowing that all of our profits go to something they believe in," said Kroon.
Tones offers residential and business service as well as stand alone calling cards through out the United States.
