IBM'S GREEN COMPUTERS
TOO BAD THEY'RE NOT ORGANIC! Imagine an acre of land, dug deepenough to stack 15 Empire State Buildings end-to-end, filled withobsolete hardware. If the current pace of junking outdatedmachines continues, this scenario will be reality by the year 2005,according to a Carnegie-Mellon University study.
IBM AS/400e Series, represents the first eco-innovation to come from IBM's Engineering Center for Environmentally Conscious Products in Research Triangle Park, NC. This line of mid-range computers is energy-efficient, quiet, made from recycled content, and designed to be recyclable. IBM takes the computers back in twelve countries.
The AS/400e Advanced Series features automatic power-on and power-off programming, easierdisassembly and separation, and use of some recycled content plastic.
The AS/400 Advanced Series was designed with the environment in mind. For example, the method of attaching acoustical foam was redesigned so it could be more easily removed, making product disassembly easier. Plastic parts are coded to IBM standards to facilitate material identification and assist in future recycling.
The AS/400 Advanced series is also designed for energy efficiency. Automatic power-on and power-off programming makes it possible to power up and shut down the system automatically, depending on the individual usage patterns. AS/400 models introduced in 1995 incorporate these same features and, in addition, achieve higher performance per watt of energy used, when compared to previous models.
