GROWING OLDER HEALTHFULLY
AND HAPPILY

Did you know if you are fifty right now you can expect to live an additional thirty years, and if you are sixty right now, chances are you have a quarter of a century left. Think of how astounding that is? In less than 100 years the life expectancy has increased by over fifty per cent. What's more in today's world, the longevity prognosis for older people is better than it is for babies. Gosh, with all this vastly expanding horizon stretching before us, we certainly have every reason to be grateful. Instead of complaining about age we ought to be reveling in our good fortune and relishing the extra time.

Growing older isn't just about the insidious body changes, or about age, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high anxiety. It is about when a person gets older making each day the "clearest and sweetest day of your life". Because when you reach a certain age in your life you can see everything from where you are at now, where you've been and what you have left behind, where you are going and who you wish to be. You have named your fears and overcome a few, and swallowed a couple regrets too. Now you can focus on what to cherish and what to change, and try to accept what you cannot. Time that was once as tight as turtleneck, has begun to give a little making room for love and friendship, meaningful work, caring, repairing and more pleasure than you use to feel you deserved. Solitude is elbowing for more space. The body you took for in your youth won't let you forget now.

We can all achieve our own definition of old, or have an ideal old age. The Native American writer, Meredil Le Suer once said: "I am luminous with age". We should all strive for that luminosity that the glowing steady Inner Light comes from a passion for life; a driving desire to stay engaged in one's life and keep seeking the truth about the world. Have you ever tried this? It requires no efforts other than purposeful concentration and determination to live each day with more aim and more awareness. It means knowing how to be fully engaged in the present, and actively in touch with the past, and by doing this, you trick time into slowing down because you are giving each day its most. These years can be the most confining and monochromatic of your life, or the most colorful and expansive. It all depends on the attitude you adopt.

Make the rest of your life a series of beginnings, avoid the inertia syndrome, and let go what is weighing you down. As your five senses cease to entertain you, unfold your spiritual wings, lifting your consciousness above your physical aches and pains to a wonderful place of love. Love that is ego-less and self-less. Love in your heart for mankind because life is so fragile. My parents always said: "You can dance the do-si-do, or suck on your teeth in the back of the dance hall". You choose. So rev up your engine, slip in your Count Basie disc, and point yourself to the wide-open road.

GROWING OLDER HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

Chances are the most people would give a little control over the aging process, but the chances are as people get older that some physiological changes are unavoidable. Our vision changes our memory gets cloudy, even our sleeping patterns become altered. Visible signs include wrinkles, dry skin and discoloration. We may experience hair loss, or notice that our posture is not as straight as it use to be. Aging can also be associated with diseases such as arthritis, arteriosclerosis, cancer, diabetes ... Well, let just stop there!

It’s not all bad news. Yes, gradual changes are inevitable, but the rate at which we change is variable. Aging gracefully begins with a basic multi-vitamins and mineral supplement. Vitamins are essential to life; they contribute to good health. We suggest VM-75 or Omnium by Solgar; they protect the body from accelerated aging processes in a variety of ways. They may enhance metabolic functions and detoxify harmful substance ... Antioxidants take on importance as we age. They help the body from the formation of free radicals. Coenzyme Q-10 and Ginkgo Biloba are powerful antioxidants that have the ability to enhance circulation and benefit the cardiovascular system. Melatonin enables a damage cell to repair itself. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that revitalizes cells and the rate of destruction. Grape Seed Extract and Pycnogenols, may be 50 times more potent than vitamin C. They strenghten and repair connective tissue, including that of the cardiovascular system.

Osteoporosis is another common problem in 25 million men and women. The most essential nutrients are Calcium and vitamin D. We suggest Tri-Boron from Twinlab or Bone Support from Solgar. These have a combination that enhances calcium absorption. There has been a recently established upper limit of 2.500 a day of calcium and recommended dosages of vitamin D dosage of 600. People with arthritis report substantial and long lasting relief while supplementing with MSM in their diet with dosages ranging from as low as 500mg to as high as 5,000mg. The beneficial effect is due in part to the ability of MSM to sustain cell flow through allowing harmful substances.

Has your memory been misbehaving lately? Does your absent mindedness make others chuckle but not you? The great philosopher William James told of the time he lost his bearing while getting ready for a dinner party, he undressed, washed-up, and climbed into bed. While we certainly would not want this to happen to you, we suggest Phosphatidyl-choline by Solar, which has shown much improvement with the ability to concentrate, recall information and remember faces and names. Acety-choline, Acetyl-carnitine, are some of the most important nutrients for the neurotransmitters, they maximize mental ability and prevent memory loss in adults.

Also consider herbs such as garlic, it helps protect the heart. Horsetail is important for maintaining the strength of bones and the walls of the blood vessels. Milk Thistle promotes good liver function. Saw Palmetto is very beneficial for prostate disorders. Valerian is valuable as a sleep tranquilizer. Eat a well balanced diet that includes raw vegetables, fruit, grains, seeds and protein. Get regular exercise. Allow yourself sufficient sleep. Learn how to relax. Keep active and be enthusiastic about life. Have some leisure time to enjoy and remain independent and in good health. We know enough to empower ourselves to control some of the aging process and to be vibrant, productive and fully functional in our golden years.
