VIDEO WITH A CONSCIOUSNESS
The Video Shop: Media for a Safe and Sustainable World seeks to raise the consciousness of students and the general public to the compelling evidence that we must stop what we are doing to this earth. We must reverse the nuclear arms race; reverse the degradation of our air, water, soil, rivers, oceans, and forests; we must stop the irreversible loss of species and our ever-growing human population. We must find constructive solutions and actions relating to these problems. A picture is worth a thousand words. You will see unforgettable scenes in our videos.
Flying above the clear cutting of millions of acres of forest land, you know viscerally that this is wrong. This practice is unsustainable. It also eliminates the homes of thousands of animals, insects, and plants, many of which have not even been identified. I have experienced that scene and I will never forget it.
When you see a huge factory ship pulling in thousands of tons of every type of fish, dolphin, and sea creature in order to capture tuna--and then dumping tons of the mangled carcasses of the unwanted fish overboard -- you know that this is destructive, wasteful of the marine environment, unsustainable and wrong. I have seen that ship and the horrible waste, and I shall not forget it.
When you see dead fish near a huge pipe which is pouring toxic waste into the river, you know that the water has been poisoned. When you visit that factory next to the Mississippi river, you see sacks of DDT piled thirty feet high to the ceiling, yet you know that DDT has long been banned as too dangerous here in the U.S. When you see that all the bags are labeled in Spanish, you know it is being exported to Hispanic countries where there are no laws which prohibit its use. You feel that this is criminal; it certainly is not sustainable, and you will not forget it.
When you see a man holding a cup under the exhaust pipe of a car and allowing the cup to be filled with water, and then drinking it, you know that what is coming out of that engine has to be hydrogen mixed with oxygen which has now become water, and you know that pollution-free vehicles are on their way. And you are filled with hope that it is not too late to save our atmosphere.
These scenes are from our videos. The Video Shop also haa other programs which illustrate ways in which people are reversing the problems we describe and are models of courage, insight, and integrity.
The Video Shop distributes over ten thousand videos and CD-ROM's every year to a diverse and growing network that includes thousands of schools, colleges, community groups, public libraries, churches, and individuals. Many of them have teacher's guides.
