SERVICES TO HELP STOP JUNK MAIL
Each year, 100 million trees and 28 billion gallons of water are wasted producing 62 billion pieces of junk mail. On average your household receives approximately 100 pounds of junk mail annually - the equivalent of 1 1/2 trees. Unfortunately, while many people attempt to recycle their junk mail because of the kind of paper it is printed on most junk mail can not be recycled.
Unable to be recycled, most junk mail ends up in the nation's overflowing landfills. Given that most landfills in the United States will be full in the next 10 years, reducing unneeded consumption is critical to solving this problem. The threat of junk mail as garbage is so great that cities have finally been forced to respond. The city of Los Angeles instituted a program to help residents slow the tide of junk mail pouring into the city's landfills. Over 40,000 people participated in this program.
Even if your city does not have a program in place to stop junk mail you can still make a difference. By contacting direct marketers and asking to have your name removed from their lists you can slow the flow of junk mail and telemarketing calls that you receive.
While it may seem like an easy job to do, stopping junk actually takes some significant work. Thus, while you can contact organizations such as the Direct Marketing Association for free, you may want to have some help from others to really do the job right. Companies such as Zero Junk Mail are appearing on the web and can help you out. And, unlike the DMA, by becoming a member of one of these organizations you receive consumer protection under various state and local laws that the DMA does not provide.
Remember, by cutting back on the amount of junk mail you receive, you reduce the need for new landfills, help save the environment, and reduce your garbage collection bills and taxes.
FACT: There are only two man-made objects that can be seen from outer space:
- The Great Wall of China
- The Fresh Kills Landfill in New York.
Don't let this be our legacy.
