REVOLUTIONARY NEW WASHER
DEMONSTRATES EFFECTIVENESS
According to the Department, if only 20 percent of homes in the U.S. usedhigh-efficiency washers equal to what was measured in the Bern Washer Study,Americans would save more than 26 billion gallons of drinking water a year, and enough energy to heat 800,000 homes. The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, worked with theBern Washer Team -- local group of residents who served as liaisons to thecommunity -- to select more than 100 homes in the city and rural district ofBern to participate in the study.
"The study is unique in that Bern is being used as a real-world testlaboratory with the participants helping to collect data and information,"said John Tomlinson, project manager, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. "Wecarefully designed and constructed the experiment to account for uncontrolledfactors so the findings would be extremely accurate."
SuperWash Saturday -- Citywide Celebration Prior to the results announcement, Maytag hosted a county-fair stylecelebration of the completion of the study's first phase -- complete withthree-legged laundry bag races to a pie-eating contest to barbecue.Participants in the study also get to keep their new high-efficiency washersas a token of appreciation from Maytag.
But the "SuperWash Saturday" celebration does not mark the end of the BernWasher Study. The Department will continue to track water and energy usagethrough November, and will maintain contact with the study's participants togauge consumer acceptance and changes in washing behavior.
In addition to being energy- and water-efficient, the Maytag Neptuneboasts a list of advanced features, such as: largest capacity of anyresidential washer on the market, with the ability to wash 10 king-size sheetsin a single load; technologically advanced tub that removes many tough stainsbetter than conventional washers; and an exclusive 15 degree tub angle foreasier loading and improved visibility.
