When the air inside a car in motion becomes oversaturated with positive ions, health hazard may be created and its effect is quite different from that of ordinary air polution.

Oversaturation is caused by friction of dust and other pollutants against the synthetic materials in the car as well as the static electricity already in the air. The car's metal body acts as a Faraday cage and prevents fresh, negatively ionized molecules from entering the car, while harmful positive molecules continue to multiply, especially when the interior is heated or cooled with little or no fresh air entering the car.
