WOOL COMFORTERS

When looking at comforters, mainly we think of three fill options, polyester fill, silk fill, and down fill; but there is one other option we should think of when searching for the right comforter, wool fill. Organic or Organically processed Wool is a great fill options for comforters, if not arguably the most option fill choice. Unlike polyester fill which is synthetic and can overheat or silk and down fill which can have other issues, wool presents arguably the most benefits with the least possible detriments.

Wool fill for Comforters includes the following benefits:

Natural Temperature Regulation - Due to the hollow structure of the wool fiber, wool fill for a comforter has not just added breathability which can prevent overheating, but also temperature regulation properties allowing you to sleep at just the right temp.

Light Weight- Since wool is naturally temperature regulating, less fill is needed to achieve the same level or warmth, hence wool comforters tend to be quite light weight compared to other fills.

Bacterial and Mold Resistance - As long as the wool is organic or organically processed and untreated, the wool still retains its natural bacterial and mold resistant properties making it a rather hygienic option for a comforter.

Low Maintenance- Wool’s natural bacterial and mold resistant properties allow it to need very minimal cleaning if ever when a duvet cover is added for additional mess protection.

Long Lasting - Wool filled comforters have what can be considered an “heirloom” quality because the comforter lasts as long as the raw material does, which with average care can be for many years.

Dust Mite Deterrent- The natural lanolin which occurs in untreated organically processed wool allows to be a natural dust mite deterrent as they do not like the wool fill because of this.

Hypo-Allergenic- It is very rare to be truly allergic to wool itself (i.e. a true wool allergy), normally when individuals have allergies to wool it is due to the chemicals applied to conventional wool. Organically processed wool does not have these chemicals and therefore does not have this issue.

When looking into a wool filled comforter do not forget to make sure the wool is organically processed and that the outer for your comforter is natural (normally organic cotton is the outer used) to ensure all these benefits are fully achieved. Lastly please note if you see a wool comforter which is “machine washable”, this normally means glues are used to give it this property. We hope you now have more knowledge on the wonderful comforter fill option of wool and will consider it next time for your comforter search!
