What Becomes of Y2K Websites
After January 1, 2000?
by John Downey

"Our assessments suggest that the global community is likely to experience varying degrees of Y2K-related failures in every sector, in every region and at every economic level."
-Jacquelyn L. Williams-Bridgers, Inspector General of the Department of State, in testimony before the Senate Committee on Y2K, July 22, 1999.

If something is less predictable than the total impact of the Y2K bug on all of the planet’s computer-based systems, it’s the ultimate shape and content of the web’s thousands of everything-every second-Y2K-only mega-sites. somehow morph into sites that actually focus on the long-term health of our economies and health delivery systems or will they fade away, along wth the people and agencies behind them? Are we never to hear from the likes of www.cassandraproject.org and the www.redcross.org once the century turns, leaving us to look to ourselves for contingency plans after that day? From the FIONS newsletter, we are told:

It is said that in order to reach a higher state ofconsciousness and being we have to pass throughtrials and tests, "a burning ground" that melts awayold patterns and beliefs. We can ask ourselves: whatdo we need to release to pass through this time portalinto a higher state of being? What values and principlescan guide us into a new state of being based on simplicityof the spirit, oneness with all life and joy in giving to others" ?
- on their Sep. 28 NYC presentation, Entering theNew Millennium: A Doorway to Higher Consciousness

With the months remaining, should we look for this kind of wisdom from the hordes of "run for your lives but first give us all your money" doomsayers or to responsible, community-based organizations like We have a few short months to make our decisions. With this column, I’ve pointed out this polarization effect and have concluded that it will probably increase and sharpen over the time ahead. Major Y2K-bug analysts like Ed Yourdon and Victor Porlier have changed the focus of their websites or have abandoned their web-based efforts altogether. What ever scenarios finally emerge, they will be remembered as awakeners, at least to a consciousness of how totally dependent our global civilization has become on computers and their interlinked technological systems.

During the August heatwave, the environmental community reiterated its familiar predictions about melting glaciers, rising sea levels and present-day coastlines going underwater. Is it possible that these facts could actually lead to significant changes at the highest political and economic levels? If this column is to continue, it will focus on developments taking us to a much higher spiritual, environmental and humanitarian consciousness from a healthier, more renewables-based global and individual perspective. And if the Y2K bug seriously impacts such sectors as banking, utilities, payrolls, government transactions, taxes and the delivery of health services, there won’t be time to play the blame game because it will be all of us fading out or all of us co-discovering our way toward an enlightened vision with creativity, intuition and boldness.
